Announcement: I am super excited to announce that we are having a live cooking workshop this weekend. More details about the same are included at the end of this newsletter.
Migraine is the most frequently reported neurological problem around the world and one of the most common health diseases. Migraine affects over 1 billion individuals globally. It is becoming the world's third most frequent condition after all.
As part of my practice, I often see clients with migrant. Most who have been struggling since decades. They are truly moved to tears when they see their episodes subsiding and even completely stopping within just weeks of changes the diet.
Migraines are frequently chronic, which means that most people suffers from it for years. Migraine triggers, like other elements of migraine, vary from person to person. Bright light or glare, lack of sleep, dehydration, habit changes, skipping meals, weather changes, loud sounds, strong scents, hormone fluctuations, and so on are some of the most typical migraine triggers.
What does science say?
An interesting case study of a 60 year old man who suffered from chronic migraine and was put on a specific sort of whole foods plant based diet with surprising benefits was reported in the British Medical Journal Case Reports.
For over 12 years, the patient had suffered from terrible migraine headaches. He had tried taking prescription medicine as well as avoiding triggering items including chocolate, cheese, nuts, coffee, and dried fruits. In order to lessen the severity and frequency of his headaches, he even practiced yoga and meditation. Nothing, however, had worked.
The man's migraines were chronic six months prior to the initial session, recurring on 18 to 24 days per month. The pain began abruptly and fiercely in his forehead temple on the left side of his head, according to what he said.
The discomfort was excruciating and it generally persisted for around 72 hours on average. His headaches were accompanied by light and sound sensitivity, dizziness, and vomiting.
Migraines are linked to systemic inflammation and oxidative stress. The individual was recommended to follow the LIFE diet by the case report office. This nutrient-dense, dark green leafy vegetable-rich, whole food plant based diet is called the Low Inflammatory Foods Everyday (LIFE) diet.
Every day, he had to consume at least 5 ounces by weight of raw or cooked dark green leafy vegetables as part of the LIFE diet. It also entails drinking one 32-ounce green LIFE smoothie per day and restricting oils, and animal protein, especially dairy and red meat. The patient reported that his migraine attacks had decreased to one day per month after only a two months on the LIFE diet.
The migraine attacks' duration and severity had also decreased. He stopped using all of his migraine medications, and even when he ate key trigger foods like iced tea, his headaches were considerably less intense and shorter than previously.
His migraines entirely ceased after three months and did not returned for atleast seven years. He was also no longer reliant on seasonal medications or those with severe negative effects.
Dr. David M Dunaief, the study's lead author, stated that the LIFE diet's outcomes are "outstanding" when compared to other therapies.
A plant- centric LIFE diet is also something similar to what I ask my clients to do and the results are truly astonishing. If you struggle with migraine or know someone who struggles with the same, please know that the cure is in your hands. Change your nutrition.
