Why you need to invest 11 minutes a day to practice the right breathing techniques.
Challenge 3.
I personally started seriously practicing pranayama since the past two years. I had the worse episode of the common cold and as far as I could remember, I always woke up with a sore throat.
Despite being physically active and eating reasonably well, I never realized how bad my immunity was. But since consciously practicing breathwork almost every day, I cannot remember a single time of being sick in the past two years. Needless to say, I don’t wake up with a sore throat anymore!
But the more I have studied about breathwork practices, the more I am amazed at its benefits.
From reducing stress and anxiety to boosting the immune system and aiding in weight loss, the benefits of incorporating breathwork into your daily routine are numerous.
Taking short breaths, also known as shallow breathing, is a common habit for many people, especially in our fast-paced and stressful lives.
However, this type of breathing has been shown to have negative consequences on our health. Shallow breathing can lead to reduced oxygenation of the body's cells, increased levels of stress hormones, and even inflammation.
On the other hand, incorporating deep and slow breaths into your daily routine can have the opposite effect. This type of breathing has been shown to:
oxygenate the body,
reduce stress hormones, and
increase the release of endorphins, which are natural painkillers.
What does science say…
One well-known advocate of breathwork is Wim Hof, also known as the Iceman.
Hof's method, which involves a combination of deep breathing, cold exposure, and meditation, has been the subject of numerous studies.
In one study, participants who practiced the Wim Hof method showed significant improvements in their immune response to a flu vaccine.
In another study, participants who practiced the Wim Hof method saw improved insulin sensitivity and a decrease in markers of inflammation.
Incorporating breathwork into your daily routine can have numerous benefits for your overall health and well-being.
